Hylotelephiums are hardy perennial succulents ideal for the UK. To reach ‘maturity’ takes 4 or 5 years creating swollen roots and a healthy crown to endure harsh winters and then jump into action in Spring with colorful leaves, then colourful stems, and then flower buds (often colourful but usually hiding a wonderful palate of colours grown only by sedumshack.
Grow these reliable Succulents in good light in well drained soil that is neither wet nor fertile – they prefer drier Uk soil and one with little nutrition or organic matter added. Slugs are a problem to ALL perennials, Sedums included. Pots, containers or just plain gravel suit these … they are versatile and reliable , hence their increasing popularity worldwide.
Theres plenty of ‘nearly good’ hylotelephiums out there to buy, vastly overpriced in a large pot, sold in a short window of time from May until sold in most garden centres and online. They dont travel well when in full leaf or a foot tall which is why we encourage buyers to buy these NOW, until May when they can be reliably boxed and sent to you with little or no damage because they are so much shorter and compact.
