This is a great value way of adding wonderful nectar rich flowers over Summer and Autumn with very little help needed. Watering or feeding is rarely wanted…. just keep slugs away and tidy up each winter and your plants will grow bigger each year, forming wide clumps of stems numbering 30 or 40 after a decade of happy growing.
Plant in a well drained, well lit location.
Frost (vernalisation) is needed so no winter protection other than a gritty, gravelly mulch to protect next years stems… it really does care for itself if you observe the basic rules of growing these plants.
Leaves are green, light green and flowers are large, tall and strong pink fading to russet brown over winter.
Great for wildlife gardens, great for beekeepers, …’ a superb cottage garden plant’ grown and shown by Monty Don on Gardeners World this , and every Autumn.
Reminder- this is not for plants in plugs – they are delivered with just green buds above fleshy roots with little substrate around them…. they are succulents and travel like this fine for weeks, and are easy to plant into your own (poor fertility) soil.
TIP: cutting back some of the stems each MAY will lead to a shorter , branching plant which flowers twice each year and is less likely to ‘flop’ outward under the weight of the flowers. autumn joy
